Mysterious Animal

The Is of Writing: Inspirational Photograph & Picture Prompts

Prompt #1:

Sometimes coming up with just the right title can be a daunting task. Create a list of titles that are inspired by this photograph or could accompany this picture as the cover of a new book.

Prompt #2:

Our eyes often play tricks on us in the dark or even in the light of day. When trying to glimpse something through the bushes or at a distance away, we are never really certain of what it is that we see. Write a description about this mysterious animal.

Prompt #3:

Use this photograph as inspiration for a spot or location in your story. Where are you? What is happening?

Saturday Morning Picture Prompt: Snowy Day

The Is of Writing: Inspirational Photograph and Picture Prompt

Take the morning to write about snow. Describe a light snow or a blizzard. Write about an anticipated winter storm with wind and snow warnings. Write about the events of the day and how a storm or light snowfall would affect them. Describe the preparations that go in to preparing for winter or the dangerous results of an unexpected storm.

Use your senses, show don’t tell, and take time to include each one into your writing.

Let inspiration come from the photograph above, find one from your own collection or use the illustration/photo from this or last year’s calendar.

Practice writing descriptions with a focus on settings. Describe what you see and take this opportunity to get creative. Just let your mind wander as the pen travels across the page describing possible sounds, smells and textures. Can you include the sense of taste? Try this writing activity with your own photographs whether it be a photograph from your youth, a family members or even a painting.

Inspirational Photos and Inspiration Boards: T is for TURKEYS

Inspirational Photos and Inspiration Boards: T is for TURKEYS

The Is of Writing: Inspiration

Thanksgiving may be a long way off yet but use these pictures as inspiration to help you write about a memory, create a short story or design a picture book.

T is for Turkeys

I created this Turkey Inspiration Board after reading the steps in How to Make an Inspiration Board, posted on Squidoo. Although I used HP Photosmart Essential, the directions found under the heading “Creating your collage” were fairly universal and easy to adapt to my program.

See Inspiration Board: Step by Step for directions on how to create an inspiration board with your photographs using Google Documents.

Inspirational Photo and Writing Prompt: R is for Rooster’s Love Classified Ad

R is for Rooster’s Love Classified Ad

Harold the Rooster

Is of Writing: Inspirational Photograph & Writing Prompt

In the first or third person, write a love classified ad for an animal.

Love Classified Ads

Handsome Bantam player tired of roaming, looking to turn over a new leaf and settle with a fine lady. He enjoys bugs, crowing, dirt baths, and leisurely walks around the neighbourhood. He is a real traffic stopper! Harold, finding the coniferous trees adjacent to lot 3107 a bit too breezy, moved into new lodgings last fall. He settled for a darker home with more acreage, hiding out in a grove of trees farther from the flow of traffic but within easy reach of a garden and constant supply of bird seed. Then winter struck. Harold does not like snow! With clear intellect, Harold realized he was ready for another move. Harold has now taken up residency in a one story, olive green shelter with lots of available space. He is searching for roommates who would be willing to share the rent fee by clearing the garden of pesky little insects and chasing off wild turkeys. They would need to be willing to share the surrounding estate with a friendly canine. Harold believes in an “open door policy” so roommates would need to be in a state of awareness and have a sense of self-preservation. Ladies with broods are not unwelcome.

Inspirational Photos: K is for KILLER CLIFFS, Suspects and Murder Mysteries

The Is of Writing: Inspirational Photographs and Writing Prompts

Months after reading a book and returning it to the book shelf, one scene stays in my mind. In this book, the male character is seriously injured during a daring attempt to rescue a young man who has fallen over the edge of a cliff. While the rescuer is being lowered from the helicopter, the harness rips and he falls to the jagged rocks below.

For today’s writing prompt take inspiration from any photograph – published in a magazine, online or one you have taken yourself – and write a scene. Change the setting to suit your needs, invent details, create the appropriate environment for the setting of your story and take some time to just write.

Near the end of the book, it was revealed that someone was trying to kill the rescuer and the harness had been sabotaged.

Try your hand at writing mysteries and develop your scene into an attempt at murder. Then you may want to visit Pete Denton’s blog posts for the 2013 A to Z April Blogging Challenge to get more information on blood analysis, DNA, and finger prints.

Inspirational Photos: B is for BOATS, BUOYS, BIRDS and BALLOONS

The Is of Writing: Inspirational Photographs

Use these pictures to help you fish for ideas:

Imagine riding in an outboard across the calm sea, early one morning in the middle of June, as you watch the sun rise. Destination – an outcrop of rocks, the perfect location during low tide for raking Irish moss.

Maybe, a new Lobster season is about to start. As you and your crew prepare to stack lobster traps on the wharf, after winning the local draw that decides who gets to load the wharf first, you board the boat to find the hull is full of water and the water pump is broken.

Or after a long day of hand-lining in a 36 foot boat, you arrive at the wharf to find a sailboat has tied up in your berth.

Never been fishing? You could pack a lunch and motor over to the nearest island for a day of relaxation and exploration.
